Northern Wind was founded and established in 1987 by Ken Melanson and Michael Fernandes as a direct off-loader, processor, and distributor of fresh and frozen scallops. The company has 100 full time employees and operates a state-of-the art BRC facility on New Bedford’s historic waterfront. In keeping with the company’s growth initiatives they had recently added two new processing facilities and have secured additional resources to high quality raw material. In addition to scallops, the Company markets and sells tuna, salmon, mussels and other specialty seafood items.  Northern Wind is now introducing many value-added seafood offerings to compliment the core itmes the company is noted for. The majority of their business is domestic and food service related however management is prepared to invest resources to grow the business on both the retail and international fronts. The company culture is defined by its hands-on ownership that is intricately involved in the day-to day operations of the company. In addition Northern Wind has an Executive Team that manages company operations and sales with vast industry experience. The company dedicates itself to consistently supplying customers with quality products at superior service levels and competitive prices. This ability to be on the cutting edge of the scallop industry has led to increased seafood sales and profit for our customer-partners. It has also led to Northern Wind’s leadership position among suppliers.

  • 2 dockside facilities on the New Bedford waterfront occupying approximately 150,000 sq ft with both fresh and frozen Scallop production line as well as on-site cold storage
  • Leader in Atlantic Lobsters with 60,000 lbs of holding tanks on-site
  • Offloading 80% of the local head fish catch landed in the port of New Bedford
  • Importer and packer of Scallops, Tuna, Salmon, Mussels, and Value-Added seafood offerings
  • Procurement/Supply Contracts with in excess of 62 vessels for North Atlantic Scallops
  • Committed access to approximately 20% of the North Atlantic Annual Quota
