Northern Wind is a direct off-loader, processor, and distributor of fresh and frozen scallops, along with additional seafood offerings. Founded in 1987 by Ken Melanson and Michael Fernandes, Northern Wind has since grown to a team of 100 full-time employees and operates a state-of-the art BRC facility on New Bedford’s historic waterfront. Since the very beginning, the Northern Wind Team has always dedicated themselves to consistently supplying customers with high quality products at superior service levels and competitive prices.




In keeping with the company’s growth initiatives, Northern Wind has gone beyond its scallop roots by expanding our product line to include tuna, lobsters, headfish, specialty seafood items, and value-added seafood offerings. Two new processing facilities have also been added, while additional resources to high quality raw material have been secured.  The majority of our business is domestic and food service related, however, management is investing in resources to grow the business on both the retail and international fronts as well.


At Northern Wind, we define ourselves by our hands-on ownership that is intricately involved in our day-to-day operations, all for the sake of our valued customers. Our Executive Team continuously utilizes their vast industry experience to manage every aspect of our operations, while also continuously evolving with the changing industry throughout the years. This ability to be on the cutting edge of the scallop industry has led to increased seafood sales and profit for our customer-partners. It is a big reason why Northern Wind is a leader among suppliers within the seafood industry!
